Writing About Nature From the Senses

Long before I became a certified coach, I spent alone time in nature and always found it rewarding to write about nature from my senses. It seems to naturally flow from senses to pen, when we give ourselves time in nature to express our creativity. Here is an example of writing from my senses many years ago.

The Side Yard

This is my special place, feeling I truly am one,

Where my soul reaches up to meld with the sun

Where body, heart, spirit and mind are free from all angst

‘Neath the shade of tall pines.

The grass is deep upon the floor

Shadows of huge crows flying low & long – screaming calls across the wake

While gulls scoop up mussels, fly high – drop – and break.

How would you like to go up on a swing or lie in a hammock near the sea’s crashing ring?

Just come out to the Side Yard and it can all be! (But of course, you’ll be sharing it all with me!)

It’s warm and protected, yet wild and free

A place where the deer and chipmunks abound, with ne’er a care of humans around.

It’s my trek back to nature, a connection so strong

Makes me question out loud…”What took me so long?”

With the Ocean, the Lighthouse, and Lobsterman’s crafts,

Howling wind in the pine tops, Birds still sing out their song,

While the rustling gold Aspens, Keep applause loud and strong.

Heavy whiffs of sea grass transport thoughts to the beach,

But the forest-clad mountains take it out of eye’s reach.

There’s only one place this could ever be.. The Maine(iac) coastline, how silly of me!

It’s a rare combination of God’s very best, With Mother Nature providing the rest

Tranquility  Peacefulness  Wilderness, too

and the magnificent ocean, reflect billowing clouds and skies blue!

An abundance of wildlife, as a natural part – Will keep this place forever, close to my heart

It’s truly my haven away from the race – (for writing, painting, soothing the soul)

A spiritual sanctuary….this Swan’s Island place.
